Turn a House in to a Home - 5 TIPS

Home is essential to our daily well being. A HOUSE whether it is an apartment, mobile home or a modern glass box, only becomes a home with the people and the special things that go inside it.

Around the world people decorate their homes in vastly different ways. No matter what size, shape or style your home takes, for me, there are a few similarities that pop up in all homes.

The new heart of the home post COVID -19, will be the entrance hall. It is the vital link between the outdoors and your safe, clean indoor environment. It should be curated to make it welcoming - hand wash and sanitiser, flowers, scented candle and a tray.

The area should incorporate mirror to make smaller areas feel larger, but it also serves as a great "final" check when you leave or enter the home.

If space allows, a chair, bench or a console is a great addition. A custom shoe cabinet is well worth the investment, no matter if it is a rental or your own home. Don't forget an entrance mat where dirty shoes can be taken off.

This is a loose term in our household as I like to showcase a collection of boxes without any practical function. Trays are used to group items together which helps to declutter the eye. Decor boxes are great for removing remote controls off coffee tables,  jars for all the never ending knick knacks, baskets for toys or displaying an indoor plant. Clam shells are brilliant for a unique way of holding keys and phones or displaying hand towels in your bathroom. Jewellery boxes to contain your special pieces and even coasters have a box!

Lighting can make or break the ambience of a room.  If space is at a premium, lamps are not an option, then have beautiful candleholders and scented candles. These provide an added bonus of smell as well as light. Floor lamps are also a go to in small spaces.
Ceiling lights should be on dimmers and pendant lighting used to centre areas like dining tables & living rooms.

Art is too often written off as unachievable, because its expensive and frivolous. Rooms come to life with something on the wall. You don't need to fill every wall or the entire wall. Mirror can be used to add light and reflection. I personally prefer something soothing, and of interest, so I love botanical prints that compliment the home, rather than being statement pieces.

One of the things that unites homes everywhere is what's under your feet! Rugs are common as they add texture, comfort and also help with sound insulation. You know how empty & cold a place is when there is no furniture or rugs in the room... it echoes. So textiles makes a room more instantly lived in.
Rug mats add a pop of colour too - use them in your kitchen , bathrooms, hallways.
